The Last Mad Scientist

Saturday, January 29th, 2011

Our youngest jammers and these guys will amaze you. One of these developers is 13!! Check it out. This was our last video interview so excuse the punchiness. This is the XNA group so lots of set up, and uploading game details is not a simple matter, check out their project, the last mad scientist.

<.p>
We can’t wait to see this game in less than 19 hours at the Global Game Jam 2011 being held this weekend from January 28-30 in Calgary.

Update: The team finished their game, with Matthew loading up code and hanging out for a demo while the kids, Rory and Daniel, 16 year old game prodigies (and I’m not kidding) came down and presented to the audience in T107.

As the last mad scientist of the world it your duty protect and nurture the very last of your precious experiments. Manage your time and resources and make sure your experiments are taken care of. When the last of your experiments dies your purpose in life is over. Can you keep the experiments alive?

One spectacular game, check it out on our game site.

Poached!

Saturday, January 29th, 2011

Poached, last but not least to upload their project, this “enthusiastic” – nudge, push, yahoo? … are working on a game and crunching away. All part of the crunch time as we are now looking at more than halfway through the jam. Lots to do in shorter time now. tick tock tick tock….

A couple of great interns to add to the mix, team “Poached”

This is game 10 of our Global Game Jam event running January 28-30, 2011

Update: The hesitation was not just shyness, but well…. this game did end up being finished.

Sheldon was seen hanging about in many places, on many teams, but ended up kind of helping with the board game. Daniel just wanted some quiet time to finish his engine and used the 48 hour marathon to finish his work and see what he could do. Kelly amazingly made a game and managed to present it with flying colors at the presentation. If I can figure out how to edit my flip videos, I’ll post his presentation. He did great.

The first and last of your species, you must use the other creatures of this land to reproduce by transforming them…like a werewolf! Also, you look like a flower. Can you survive this harsh, sparsely-populated world?

I’m glad to see he got a game in there, there was a chance he would have produced pieces with no game or team to show for. Hazards of being the quiet guy in the crowd.

To The Pods!!

Saturday, January 29th, 2011

Here’s another one of the game projects being developed at Global Game Jam 2011 in Calgary, which runs this weekend, January 28-30th.

In To The Pods!! people are escaping earth as a deadly virus is whipping out the human race. This colourful array of creativity definitely makes for one of the most vibrant and fun of our games.

We will continue to update you over the weekend. We still have another day but time is getting closer.

This team, the Broken Kings gets a WOW! They dazzled us with their presentation, their presence and energy as a team, the social media – I’ve been catching their blogs and videos, great work.

They are in the process of launching their iphone game. Congrats are due to this team, who pushed with little sleep through out the 48 hours.

Ponus

Saturday, January 29th, 2011

Six Bullets and a Room Full of Gas, Ponus, and learning how to make games.. and who knows what else

This team made more than one game and it got more interesting with sound added.

It was 3:00 on Saturday and this is one of our games at the Global Game Jam 2011 in Calgary from Friday, January 28th to 30th. We are almost on the home stretch ready for our Pizza from our friends at W-ith O-ut P-apers … coming at 4:00… Jesse was on the way.

This group sat behind me most of the afternoon so I was able to easily annoy them with my Ustream on the iphone.

Check out this two btt’d sheep character

We’ll update you on this game more during the event.

Update: I’m still waiting to hear from the guys on this team. Yules ended up to be a sound and art expert so was pulled into a ton of teams and stayed up most of the time.

The Last Gummy Bear

Saturday, January 29th, 2011

Nothing like reporting on a game when it’s your family. Carly and her husband Isaac had to endure my video pestering.
They have met up with some friends and have been working away on the Last Gummy Bear. As of 1:30 Saturday, here is their game. It looks like they are having fun.
This is the 5th game project to be entered in the Global Game Jam.

This weekend we are all hanging out watching our teams (we think we’ll have 9 in total) upload their projects.

Not quite half way. We will update more during the weekend.

Update: They were looking into some tools to publish a demo for publishing. Haven’t seen any updates yet.

Flatlander

Saturday, January 29th, 2011

One of the Games being built from scratch at the Global Game Jam, running for 48 hours this weekend. Today is the start of day 2, still more than half way to go.

A wonderful mix of music, interesting character development, and collaborative talent. These guys are able to demo code and show details. Wow. Still lots to go but here is a preview of where they are as of 11:00 Saturday

We’ll give you an update later in the event.

Update: Impressive team spirit. Evan what a purple heart award, well, a very cute mushroom. Another winner, done me proud!
